The next 4 movements are the majority part of the first section of the first form of Ving Tsun, it’s the core component of it, everything in the Ving Tsun system is designed based on it, so let’s see why it is so important!

The first section is called the forward intention section, or fundamental section, whatever it is. It’s compulsory, movements before here define several things first, like our biomechanics and methodology, etc. From here, it’s all about intentions, ideas, concepts, something that is rather important to keep in mind and feel. If you take them as techniques, a kind of counterattack movement, you will fail.

First, the spreading hand, spreading hand is just the shape; the shape has its own applications, which will be introduced in section 3. Here we just use it to represent the inside hand forward intention.

The inside hand is superior, in terms of springy force, and the angle, remember it!

When we face to face, we keep a square, two pairs of shoulders parallel. Why? Try it with a minimum amount of power and punch the shortest line, clash with your opponent, and you will see, that you can easily overpower your opponent, and his punch will automatically be excluded.

Then what is forward intention? It’s easy, forward intention simply means the intention to attack. It may sound too easy, but I tell you, if you have any experience before, you will notice that keeping an intention is not easy, especially in an intensive fight. We will have a lot of obstructions, both physically and mentally, so keep in mind to always try to attack the shortest line with springy force; it’s everything Ving Tsun is about.

When the obstructions are gone, pursue/attack the shortest line immediately,

that’s forward intention. So spreading + forward intention = inside hand forward intention, and inside hand is superior, so we practise it only once here, when we do it, we must do it as slowly as we can, because every single millimeter, we want to remind ourselves, go forward and springy force, it’s more of a mindfulness exercise, so again, don’t take it as a technique here, if you want to know what the spreading shape is about, we will fully reveal it in section 3 as mentioned above, here just show you one photo down below, the shape itself it’s a deflection, a counterattack, the shape does not necessarily have to be like this, it can be a fist, palm or whatever. But in forms, we use it as an inside hand representative; we utilize the whole forearm, from the elbow to the fingertips, to maximize the usage, to fully leverage power from the ground. That’s it!
