Here in part 4, we talk about two tiny movements that we will see again and again throughout every single form of Ving Tsun system(except weapon forms, of course). So let’s explain them here once and for all, see how important they are.

First of all, again, it’s a traditional martial art, it’s Kung Fu, it’s designed for self-defense, real fight scenarios, why I emphasize it here, because the first tiny movement is opening your fist, spreading, flattening, then fully rotating your wrist, your hand. Still can’t get it? Unlike in sport arts: cage fights and competitions, they wear protection, boxing gloves, etc. We don’t talk about regulations and rules in their systems, but one thing is for sure: gloves are for protection. In real fight scenarios, we usually don’t carry a pair of gloves everywhere, especially boxing gloves. That’s hilarious, right?

By rotating our wrist again and again, we strengthen it and prepare it for a real fight any time. This is the simplest purpose, just for exercise, because the wrist is the weakest joint of our arm, also the most flexible one, which we will talk about it in the next paragraph and extend it in future articles. When we punch, the harder we can, the greater recoil we need to withstand as well. Basic, easy physics, our wrist is right behind the fist, so if it can’t withstand the impact, if it fails, our punch can’t be powerful, even the wrist itself gets hurt, so simply practise this tiny movement more.

Second, we have a bending, locking action. This is the shape when we are ready to punch; we make the wrist fixed, securely fastened, a good shape to withstand the force of the impact of the collision with the object. Drop the elbow down, and you will see a perfect straight line, ready for a punch. It also helps us to punch in a straight line, which prevents us from getting hurt in the elbow, elbow is definitely stronger, however, when you can punch harder, if the forearm can’t travel a perfect straight line, it may hurt the elbow as well, so by locking the wrist, easily make the whole arm punch a straight line, additionally, the straight line also ensure the power won’t be scattered to any other directions, no waste, all to your opponent, more penetrating, armour-piercing power.

Third, the wrist rotation can also be used for side changing applications in real fights, when we need to change from outside to inside and vice versa, it also combines with other ways of punching to use. However, we are not there yet, we have not even introduced inside and outside, what about inside and outside punch, what’s their features, so bear with me, let’s reveal them step by step, a vertical punch is preferred in Ving Tsun for some good reasons, so let’s practise this first, others later.
